The permanent exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle is undergoing a transformation: Toby Kamps, the new curator of modern art, is presenting his section with a fresh perspective. Under the title “THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD,” familiar favorites from the collection will be on view alongside works that are still unfamiliar to visitors—including new acquisitions and pieces that haven’t been shown in a long time—starting September 3, 2026. Toby Kamps describes going into the storage area and unearthing hidden treasures there as one of the most rewarding tasks of a curator.
We are delighted to support the new permanent exhibition on modern art with a guided tour in German and English, a children’s tour, and a tour in easy language (German). All tours are available in the Kunsthalle’s free app.
Now that we have two certified translators for easy language on our team, we were able to translate the tour in-house, thereby minimizing the loss of information as much as possible. The Agency for Accessibility supported us during the review by a focus group of people with disabilities—a crucial step in any translation into simplified language.
The children’s tour is narrated by “Loplop,” the bird-like creature repeatedly depicted by Max Ernst. Young Cleo Szokodi, formerly one of our child narrators, lent it her voice. Accompanied by a variety of sounds, ambient effects, and noises, Loplop guides visitors through the many different forms that “modern” can take.
