Women Artists of the Blue Rider

23.10.2026

Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke—these names are inextricably linked to the “Blue Rider.” Yet Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, Maria Franck-Marc, and other female artists were also part of the “Blue Rider” circle. They developed their own artistic approaches, exchanged ideas with one another, and helped shape modernism. In art history, however, they have long been in the shadows.

The exhibition “Women Artists of the Blue Rider” now reverses this perspective and places these female artists at the center. On display are works by Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, Maria Franck-Marc, Erma Bossi (pictured right), Elisabeth Epstein, and Sonia Delaunay, among others.

Three museums have joined forces for this project: The Museum Wiesbaden kicks things off on October 23, 2026. Starting March 13, 2027, the exhibition will be on view at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen. Finally, in October 2027, it will move on to the Lenbachhaus in Munich.

We, too, had the opportunity to work on the Women Artists of the Blue Rider: We edited the texts for the audio tour, oversaw the English translation, and produced the German and English versions. The German version features the voices of Daniela Witte and Jakob Riedl, and the English version features Maria Rabl and Christian Wolf.

We’re already eagerly looking forward to the exhibition and hope all visitors enjoy it!
