Contemporary Witnesses Memories

19.08.2025

Nine contemporary witnesses share their memories in a new audio tour of the outdoor area of Rammenau Castle: For example, Ursula Schmidt, who, as a young art student, spent six weeks in the castle with the now-famous artist Gerhard Richter. At that time, the castle served as the summer residence of the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Another, Professor Dr. Siegfried Börngen, who moved into the castle with his family after the Second World War – and he still remembers the summer evenings filled with fireflies. "My time in Rammenau was the best time of my childhood and apprenticeship," he says.

Restorer and architectural researcher, Mr. Frank-Ernest Nitzsche provides fascinating insights into the extensive renovation of the Baroque castle. Petra Jüptner recounts how, at the age of twelve, she was discovered by a film crew as an extra, in Rammenau. Shortly thereafter, she appeared in front of the camera as a goat girl in the film "From the Life of a Good-for-Nothing." This film, starring Hannelore Elsner and American actor Dean Reed, was largely shot in and around the castle. And Martin Dombrowsky, the garden master of the Baroque castle, raves about the special nature of hydrangeas, everyday life in the castle garden and trees that pass on their genes to future generations.

We in soundgarden, compiled a 45-minute recording script from all these life stories and supplemented it with a narration. These short parts are spoken by Mr. Matthias Klie, who is also known as the voice of Mads Mikkelsen, among other things. With audible enthusiasm, he provides historical context to the stories of the eyewitnesses.

The audio tour is available free of charge via the Experience the Castle Country, "Schlösserland erleben" App.
